Book Club -- The Poisonwood Bible

My mom's group has a wonderful Book Club idea attatched to it. Once a month, moms gather around in the living room of a member to discuss a selection chosen by that month's host. This month, Lisa Ross, co-organizer, chose the book The Poisonwood Bible. I've  been reading the book since mid-July with less than two hundred pages to go, which is a good thing because today is Friday and the book club is on Monda. I am sure to get in some good reading time this weekend thanks to Papa Bear.

The next book is The Rug Merchant. I do not have that book yet, even though I signed up for the Meetup already. I tend to do that kind of thing a lot.

I like  the book. I like it a lot, actually. I love the title, I am a particular fan of "religious" works. I like writings with a religious theme. I also like the African theme. It has always been a passion of mine to travel to Africa. However, I do not just want to travel there, I want to experience the culture and the people firsthand, just like  the Price family. I wanted to keep a record for the people/of the people. In anthropology, they have a special term for this: ethnology.

The book is a well-chosen selection for a mom's group. The focus on the mother and the daughers in the story is generally appealing to a motherly audience. The girls come of age, going from adolescent girls to grown women on their own. Ruth May ends up passing away, Leah desires to marry Anatole an African boy, Adah ends up back in America at University, and Rachel unexpectedly settles in Johannesburg with Eeben Axelroot. Nathan is still in the Congolese jungle trying to save the children. I feel sorry for the girls, and yet I envy the experiences they had in Africa.
